Magik's return in New X-Men

I read New X-Men #16

Ever notice that everytime the X-Universe does an alternate reality storyline they always bring back Ilyanna? I saw her in Exiles, Age Of Apocalypse, Shattershot and the Cross-Time Caper. I was excited the first few times but this time around in House Of M, Magik's return has left me cold.

In House Of M we are given a world where all the characters are given their heart's desire. For Magneto that means he rules the world and there are no X-Men to oppose him. So... if there are no X-Men then they never had to go fight him on his island in the Bermuda triangle. And since they were never on that island, Ilyanna was never there to fall through that portal into Belasco's Limbo where she grew into a young teenager as his apprentice until she freed herself. She also never would have forged the soulsword.

Yet here she is in House Of M as a teenager complete with sword and no explanation of how this happened. I talked this over with a friend and he argued that perhaps it was Peter's heart's desire to have his family back. While I can agree that this is something Peter would want, it also seems to me that he would want the younger version of his sister that never suffered those years in Belasco's realm. As a matter of fact I find it hard to believe that any X-character who endured Inferno would wish for an Ilyanna with any ties to Limbo.

I want to believe they will address this in a panel or two in future issues but understandably there is a bigger story that needs to be told. It just feels so cheap this time around that I'd rather they had never bothered to bring her back at all if they weren't going to do it right.

I suppose none of this will matter once House Of M is over anyway...

I think she is the younger version. The other New Mutants are twenty something, where as she is younger than the "new x-men" students. If Dani is supposed to be like I don't know, 23 and Magik is supposed to be like 14 or 15, then that is about right.

Time is a little tricky in the Marvel Universe. Way back in Sensational She-Hulk #4 (I think), the Blonde Phantom broke it down for us. For every 3 years that pass in the real world only one year passes in the Marvel Universe. I don't have the issue anymore so the details are a bit fuzzy in my mind. That's why instead of being hella old most of the team is in their late twenties to early thirties.

Ilyanna died in 1993 in issue 303. In that issue Jubilee said she was "barely seven". So this being 2005 she should be about 11ish. Perhaps she shows up in New X-Men with boobs because she's an early developer?

Yeah but she had also already spent all that time as a teenager before she was reverted to her normal age. So when she reverted, did she go back to the age she was when she went to Limbo and grew to a teenager, or did she revert back to the age she would have been had she developed at a normal pace on Earth? Without the lost time, she might have been older. Who knows how things happened in the House of M history anyway?

Anyone look at the recent powerpack or powerpack/x-men comix(they're kind of more for kids, but I picked them up anyways for old times sake). Obviously they aren't using the three to one ratio there. Katie power should be like 14 or 15 if they were using the ratio, but it seems like she is still the same age from 20 years ago, as are the rest of them. But in Runaways when Julie power was in a few issues, she was totaly an adult.

I noticed that too. When she appeared in Runaways, I figured they must all be older now. I haven't been paying much attention - are they really the same age as before? Is Katie the youngest? During the massacre in the 80's she was maybe 4 or 5, right? So by the 3-to-1 rule she would be about 10 or 11 now. 2005-1987=18, 18/3=6, 4+6=10. However, I have heard that the 1-to-3 ratio is sometimes a 1-to-5 ratio! How old is Franklin Richards these days?

I just checked that out. The reason I'm hearing is that those issues are supposed to be out of normal continuity. Each is a one shot featuring a diferent X-character and they are all going to tie together by the fourth issue. Perhaps by then they will be at reasonable ages.

But Wolvie's costume has the new tiger stripe things on the sides. I may have missed the Powers' ages, but I noticed that! It also seems weird if they are back in the 80's or whenever when mutants were mostly hated and feared that all those kids would dress up like Wolverine for Halloween. Hey, "Wolverine" rhymes with "Halloween"!
